Job Description

Research Assistant, Professor Mertha Khmer Rouge Project

SAIS China is looking for a research assistant to work with Professor Andrew Mertha on a research project on the Khmer Rouge (knowledge of or experience with Cambodia desirable, but not necessary or expected) for up to between 15 hours per week, beginning as soon as possible through December 2018, with the possibility of extending it into the next calendar year (2019).  The position will be paid hourly at $15.  Tasks include:

-        Organizing existing electronic documents 

-        Summarizing content

-        Preliminary analysis

-        Seeking out supporting documents

-        Setting up meetings with potential interlocutors (interviewees, including scholars, practitioners, and government officials)

-        Compiling timelines and memos on various subject areas

-        Work with Professor Mertha on additional items related to this research project


Selection Criteria:

-        Eligible to work as a student employee at the SAIS DC campus

-        Ability to devote at least 12 hours a week

-        Ability to conduct research in English (knowledge of French would be helpful, but not necessary)

-        Excellent organizational and communication skills

-        Familiarity in working with electronic media (particularly pdfs)
