Research Assistants - China-Africa Research Initiative Position
The China Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies invites applications for the position of Research Assistant. Reporting to the Director of CARI through the CARI Research Manager, research assistants will work on a number of tasks, notably on collection, cleaning, tracking and analysis of Chinese finance/loan data across Africa. The research assistants will participate in drafting papers, analyzing the data, maintenance of databases and data archival system. Other China-Africa-related tasks may be assigned.
candidates should have some knowledge of China as well as be able to read
Chinese. Ability to work in French, Portuguese, or Arabic would be a further
asset. The candidates' computer needs to have Chinese-input system. Research
Assistants will be responsible for extensive liaison with external sources of
information, and other researchers. Candidates should be skilled at using
Google search engine, Nexis-Lexis, and Chinese websites. Knowledge of STATA,
Excel, and econometrics would be an advantage but are not required.
We seek creative individuals with the skills of a detective or an investigative journalist, organized and cheerful perfectionists, quick learners, and nuanced researchers. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, the ability to multitask, to keep regular working schedules, and strong critical thinking and writing skills. Experience with China Development Bank or China Export-Import Bank would be an asset. This will be primarily desk research, but may involve extensive follow-up by telephone and other means, and candidates should have the ability to contact sources overseas in Chinese. There is some possibility of field research.
The role will require at least 5-8 hours per week with flexible hours for a 4-month commitment and an extension into the following academic year contingent upon performance. Ph.D. students will earn $20.00/hour and MA candidates will earn $18.00/hour. Applicants must be Johns Hopkins University students and eligible to work in the United States.
