MIEF Research Assistant (Professor Sam Asher) Position
MIEF Research Assistant (RA) | Academic Year 2020-2021
Professor Sam Asher is seeking a student RA interested in working on research using big administrative and other unconventional data sources to understand the microeconomic determinants of growth and poverty reduction.
The potential candidate must have strong coding skills. Proficiency in Stata is required. Other computer programming skills, especially Python and ArcGIS (or comparable mapping software, e.g. QGIS), are highly desirable. Tasks will include scraping, managing and analyzing very large datasets on poverty and growth in India, working with new methods in computer science and statistics, conducting literature reviews, and assisting in the writing of academic papers.
For an idea of what types of research projects Professor Asher works on, please refer to his website. While the exact work will depend both on ever-changing research priorities and research assistant skills, research in progress includes work on discrimination in the Indian judiciary, segregation in Indian cities, and temporary rural-urban migration.
If you work with our team, you will learn cutting edge methods in both computer science and economics, skills that are highly valued in the research world, as well as in the private sector. You'll learn big data skills that are increasingly valuable in academic research but aren't currently being taught in Econ masters or PhD programs.
This position is for up to 200 hours during the 2020-2021 academic year.
